All of the garrison members have been there…watching a group re-enacting and wondering what it would be like to be part of that.

Would you like to be a pikeman or a musketeer, part of the cannon crew? Or perhaps the musician in you wants to be a drummer or fifer, perhaps a camp follower whose role it was to keep the fighting men fed and clothed. And of course, with our hugely popular MULTI-PERIOD events, we have: Roman, Viking, Medieval, Napoleonic and WWI options as well.

There are always lots of questions you will want to ask about joining and questions for us to ask you. A lot of people are concerned about the cost of buying kit and whether you need to commit to every event we do.

Re-enacting is a fun and exciting hobby, so we are there to help you with kit to begin with and we certainly do not expect you to be at every event…although brilliant if you are!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join up?

The best advice we can offer is to come and have a chat with us at an event. That is where we are in full kit and living and breathing history and where you see us at our most authentic. We can then tell you and show you what we actually do so you can get a better idea of whether it is for you or not.

What kit do I need?

To begin with, it may seem very daunting when you see how much kit some reenactors have. Don’t worry, as basic kit can be loaned to you to begin with. If you get hooked and you want to buy your own, this suits us as we can loan kit to other new members.

How old do I have to be to join up?

We can enlist children from 12 years old, but parents have to be with them throughout the event. Once children are 16 they will not need parental supervision anymore.

What happens at events?

We start arriving around 8.30am and finish off setting up the camp which normally starts on a Friday evening. We have a talk in the morning, go through the day and ensure we are all dressed appropriately and we are authentic as possible. We begin in earnest around 10.00am until 4.00pm when we have stand down. The day is interspersed with: weapon displays, cannon firings, music, living history, skirmishes, talks from the barber surgeon. During our opening times, there is continual interaction with the public.
